Many recipes call for sifted flour, sugar or sifting to combine ingredients. The point of sifting is to lighten the dry ingredients which may have gotten clumped from being packaged and stored over time. We know a sifter may not be a staple household item for most people so we’ve devised a couple of ways to sift dry ingredients without a sifter.
1. Use a strainer over a mixing bowl. You can use a small hand strainer or a regular sized strainer will work as well.
Holding the strainer handle with one hand, use the other hand to gently tap the strainer over the mixing bowl. The flour will easily and softly sift through the strainer.
2. Wire whisk – use a wire whisk to sift your dry ingredients. No wire whisk? You can use a fork (not as effective but still a reasonable alternative option).
