- 1 box Cake Mix (any flavor) (and ingredients the box calls for: oil, water, eggs, etc.)
- 1 can Frosting (any flavor)
- 1 lb Melting chocolates or candy melts (we prefer Ghiradelli)
- 9x13 Baking Dish
- Large Mixing Bowl
- Lollipop sticks
-
Preheat oven and prepare cake according to instructions on the package.
-
After cake is cooked, let it cool completely.
-
Crumble cake into a large bowl using hands or a fork. Stir frosting into crumbles until mixture is sticky but not too smooth.
-
Roll cake mixture into 1 1/2-inch balls and arrange on a baking sheet. (We like to use a cookie scoop or measuring spoon for consistent sizing.)
-
Place in the freezer for 15 minutes to get them firm (this helps during the dipping process).
-
Melt about chocolate candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave, about 45 seconds at 50% power. *Check package for specific instructions, each brand melts differently*
-
Dip each cake pop in the melted chocolate. Repeat melting chocolate and dipping remaining cake pops. Decorate pops with sprinkles or your other favorite toppings.
A lot of flavor combinations will work well for cake pops. Some of our favorite examples:
Chocolate cake with chocolate icing
Funfetti cake with vanilla or funfetti icing
Strawberry cake with strawberry vanilla icing
Pumpkin cake with cream cheese icing
Red velvet cake with cream cheese icing
To keep your cake pops upright when the melted chocolate is drying, you can use a styrofoam block or turn a colander upside down using the holes to put the sticks through. Wilton and other brands also sell cake pop stands that are reusable.
